About

IMG_0084

Red Edge Design started as a collaboration between Matt Oster and Saskia Esslinger, and of home and garden services in 2008, working towards creating Urban Home Steads for Modern Living here in Anchorage, AK.  Although our goals and collaboration remain, the gardening and workshop side of the business has moved into its own as the Williams St Farmhouse.  Red Edge Design’s focus is now towards energy efficiency modeling, building science, information sharing, and improving buildings in Alaska (with a little homesteader when ever we get the chance).

IMG_8732Saskia grew up helping her parents in their large kitchen garden here in Anchorage.  She has a Bachelors degree in Environmental Science and a masters in Regenerative Entrepreneurship from Gaia University.  She was certified in Permaculture design in 2004 and as a Permaculture teacher in 2010.  Saskia has worked on organic farms in upstate New York and central America and developed a children’s gardening program as a VISTA volunteer in Texas.  She is passionate about growing, cooking, and eating food!

IMG_7609Matt is our resident building geek who grew up as a forth generation carpenter until he started playing with the math on homes and buildings.  Matt is a certified AHFC Energy Rater, a Building Performance Institute Building Analyst, Certified Passive House Consultant (CHPC), and as a Permaculture Designer. He also has a residentially endorsed general contracting licence.  Matt is focused on helping people, their health in the built environment, and energy saving solutions for the North in new and existing construction.
